What is affiliate marketing?
As a blogger, you become an authority or influencer in your niche. If you’re active on social media or email, you probably also build up a certain amount of trust with your audience.
So when you recommend a product or service, your audience listens.
If you’re an affiliate for that product or service, you’ll make a commission every time someone clicks on your affiliate link and makes a purchase.
As an example, consider my guide on the best home office furniture, where I review and recommend desks, computer monitors and other essentials.
I’m part of Amazon’s affiliate marketplace, so if a reader buys one of my recommended products on Amazon, I’ll make a certain percentage of that sale.
Every affiliate program has its own terms and conditions. Some might only give you a small percentage of a sale, like 3% or so.
Others could give you a whopping cut, for example, 60%.
As you can imagine, some blog niches are more profitable than others, due to higher-priced products and services and higher affiliate commissions.
That said, highly profitable niches can be more competitive. It can be harder to sell a high-ticket item to your audience.
And as a blogger, it can be tough to compete against big companies with an entire editorial team publishing blog posts and reviews on a daily basis.
If you’re a beginner blogger, search for the sweet spot of decent profitability and traffic with relatively low competition as you’re planning your niche and affiliate marketing strategy.
How to choose the best affiliate programs for your blog
Splashing random affiliate links all over your blog probably won’t make you much money blogging. Instead, you need to come up with a strategy for your affiliate marketing.
So how can you choose the best affiliate marketing programs to join and promote? Considering these factors will help:
- Payout terms: Take a look at a company’s payout structure for affiliates. You could get a percentage of a sale that’s anywhere from 2% or 3% all the way up to 60% or 70%. The amount can help you decide if the affiliate program is worth it.
- Recurring vs. one-off commission: Some programs will pay you a one-time commission for referring a customer. Others, however, will pay you a recurring commission every month that a customer is with them. These recurring commissions can be especially lucrative.
- Cookie duration: Affiliate programs track the purchases that come from your affiliate links via web cookies (data files that indicate your search history). But those cookies don’t last forever. Most affiliate programs offer a 30-day cookie life, meaning your reader has 30 days to make a purchase. If they wait two months to buy, you won’t make any money from the sale. The best affiliate programs have long cookie durations, giving your readers more time to make a purchase after clicking on your affiliate link.
Other factors to consider:
- Relevance to your niche: If you’re a finance blogger, your readers probably don’t want to hear your recommendations for the best home gym equipment. The best affiliate marketing programs offer products and services that are relevant to your niche and audience. Think about who your readers are and what problems they have when choosing the best affiliate programs for your blog.
- Competition: Some niches are more competitive than others. It can be tough to get your content ranking on Google if you have to compete against a bunch of big brands. When searching for the best affiliate marketing programs, look for products and services that you have a chance of ranking for.
- Belief in product: Should you recommend a product or service you’ve never tried personally? This is a tricky question to answer. In my opinion, it’s okay to write about things you haven’t personally used as long as you do your due diligence with thorough research. But you want to be careful not to recommend bad products or services, or you’ll lose your audience’s trust. Plus, if you’re an affiliate for physical products, some programs won’t give you a commission if the customer asks for a refund.
- Affiliate support: Some company’s simply provide you with an affiliate link and call it a day. But others offer their affiliates a lot of support. They share ideas about how to promote their products, provide graphics and banners, let you create custom links, provide special discounts to your readers, and more. If you’re looking for the best affiliate marketing programs for beginners, you might prioritize affiliate programs that offer this high level of support.
Blog posts that work best for affiliate marketing
Finally, I wanted to share a few thoughts on the types of blog posts that tend to work best for affiliate marketing.
There are three types:
- Best of lists (for example, my article 7 Best Blog Hosting Sites)
- Product/service reviews (for example, my article Bluehost Review: Fast, Affordable Hosting for Bloggers)
- Product/service comparisons (for example, my article Siteground vs. Bluehost: Which Is Better?)
“How to” posts can also make money, but they don’t always convert readers into buyers as well as these other post types.
So why do these posts tend to convert the best?
Well, think about it — if someone is reading a “best of” post or review, they’re usually looking for a product recommendation.
For instance, if I’m searching for “best air conditioner,” it’s because I’m looking to buy an air conditioner. Or if I already have a specific brand in mind and want to read a review of it, I want to know if it’s a good purchase.
When I look for these posts, I do so because I want to make a purchase (this is called “transactional intent”).
As a blogger and affiliate marketer, you live in the middle between a reader’s transactional intent and their actual purchase. You can provide thoughtful product recommendations and reviews and help a reader come to a buying decision.
Once they click on your affiliate link and make their purchase, you’ll make money.
