Is remote working a passing fad, or could it transform the workforce as we know it? According to a new survey by job board giant Indeed, remote working is here to stay.
After polling 1,000 employees and employers across industries, Indeed confirmed that work-from-home arrangements are beneficial for workers and companies alike.
Here were some of their unique findings about the power of telecommuting.
55% of surveyed employers allow remote working
Work-from-home arrangements have been on the rise in the past few years, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics noting a 19% rise between 2003 and 2015. According to this latest Indeed survey, 55% of companies surveyed allow remote working part or all of the time.

75% of employees say location flexibility boosts work-life balance
Working remotely gives you the freedom to integrate your work life with your personal life. Instead of waiting until night-time or the weekends to run errands or book appointments, you can interweave work responsibilities with personal ones in a schedule that works for you.
Indeed found that most people enjoy the greater work-life balance that comes with working remotely. Three out of four respondents said they felt better work-life balance with this policy.
What’s more, 57% of respondents said the option to work at home reduced their stress and led to them taking fewer sick days. Hear that, employers? Allowing flexible work arrangements could mean a happier and healthier workforce.
47% of workers value a remote work policy in their next job
When searching for a full-time job, you’re probably hoping for all the usual benefits: health insurance, paid time off, and a 401(k). But lots of employers are going beyond the traditional benefits to offer perks like the option to work from home, a health and wellness stipend, and even student loan repayment assistance.
And it’s a good thing they are, since nearly one out of two respondents said a remote work policy is important to them in their next job. What’s more, 40% of respondents said they’d consider a pay cut if they could work from home. And 30% said they would actually look for new employment if their current remote work policy were revoked.
If you’re an employer, not only could offering remote work arrangements attract more employees, but it could also make your current ones more devoted and likely to stick around.
60% of those surveyed were more productive working from home
In the past few years, many offices have gone completely bananas over the open office floor plan, which often features a minimalist design in a large open space with few or no barriers between one person and another.
Although this design was intended to encourage collaboration and do away with the isolating effects of the cubicle, it seems to have backfired in a major way. In 2017, a survey found that 58% of high-performance employees said they needed private space to solve problems.
And 54% said the open office environment was way too distracting. Plus, if you’re an introvert, this open office set-up is especially not conducive to thinking about problems, processing information, or getting stuff done.
The option to work remotely, on the other hand, seems to be a boon for worker productivity. Indeed’s survey found that six out of 10 employees are more productive when working from home.
This finding isn’t surprising, considering the fact that it lets you choose an environment where you’re most focused and work during the hours you’re most productive. Thanks to online communication apps, working from home doesn’t eliminate the chance to collaborate. Instead, people can still work together to achieve a common mission, while also enjoying the freedom to work when and where they want.
