The U.S.’s Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) guarantees just 12 (unpaid) weeks off for the birth of a new child to full-time workers who qualify. (In fact, millions of American moms aren’t offered any maternity leave after the birth or adoption of a child.) New moms frequently need to make a choice: leave their infant with a daycare, nanny, or family member, or lose their job. In other words, our government really puts the FML in FMLA.

The Mom Project has a spectacular social mission: to make it easier for women to re-enter the workforce after having children. The organization writes,

Juggling a career and a family is a nearly impossible task. Our platform makes it easier by matching you with work opportunities that align with your work and flexibility preferences.

The Mom Project collects a fee from the hiring company, but membership for you is free. They match you with remote jobs for moms in tech, finance and accounting, marketing, HR, legal, operations, and sales.

Along with work from home options, you can also find on-site jobs that The Mom Project promises are compatible with your work and life preferences.

2. Hire My Mom

HireMyMom.com allows stay at home moms to upload a resume and apply for jobs and projects they can do from home from their computer. As with the others, you create a profile and then apply for jobs.

HireMyMom.com doesn’t take a commission; instead, they charge a fee of $29.95 a quarter (or $99 for a year). They post jobs in a host of different areas, including blogging, copy editing, finance, customer service, administrative work, virtual assistance, marketing, and sales.

3.  Power to Fly

With Power to Fly, you start by filling out a profile and can then search for job opportunities. You can keep your resume up even after you find a job, in case something interesting comes along.

Power to Fly has a “Remote Jobs” category you can select as you search, and it lists tech, engineering, product and design, marketing, and sales jobs specifically for women.

4. The Second Shift

Membership to The Second Shift is free, but if you get hired for a project through the site, 5% of your proceeds will go to them. They do provide invoicing, payments, and tax forms, which is a nice benefit of the commission fee. The company says,

We are on a mission to change the future of work for women.

The Second Shift will check references and conduct a personal interview with you in order to then match you with projects and jobs you’d for which you’d be a good fit. They mainly work with companies seeking help on marketing and finance projects.

5. Werk

Werk offers another great service for highly educated and qualified parents looking for remote jobs for moms with built-in flexibility they can do from home, whether full or part-time.

This site charges an annual membership fee to access its job listings, which are generally in the fields of communications and PR, fundraising, marketing, product management, sales and business development, talent and culture, finance and accounting, and law.

They claim to offer jobs with “pre-negotiated flexibility,” so anything you apply to is already designed for parents who need flexible schedules. Their jobs are categorized by their degree of flexibility, so parents can apply for jobs that are fully remote, partially remote, part-time, or that operate at hours other than the standard 9 to 5.

Another built-in option gives employees the ability to make last-minute adjustments to their schedules, a useful perk for when your kid gets sick or your babysitter cancels unexpectedly.

6. Pepperlane

Maybe you’ve thought about starting your own local business while you’re at home with the kids. Pepperlane offers plans to help moms take their talents — such as hair-styling, babysitting, cooking, college counseling, writing, home cleaning, newborn care, photography, personal styling, interior design, you name it — and reach interested customers while building their business from home.

Through Pepperlane, you can create and manage your business, get help with marketing, and find advice and encouragement from other moms. This Cambridge, MA start-up was the idea of Sharon Kan, who co-founded the Women Innovating Now Lab at Babson College.
